LPA Food Safety (Level 1)
LPA Food Safety (Level 1) is a simple on-farm food safety program requiring the producer to be able to ‘back up’ the claims they make on the LPA National Vendor Declaration (NVD)/Waybill.
The LPA food safety standard consists of one module, Food Safety Management, made up of five elements:
- Property risk assessment- Ensures the livestock are not exposed to areas on a property that may be contaminated with persistent chemicals.
- Safe and responsible animal treatments - Ensures the livestock do not contain unacceptable chemical residues or physical hazards.
- Stock foods, fodder crops, grain and pasture treatments- Ensures the livestock are not exposed to feeds that contain unacceptable contamination, specifically, any food containing animal products and/or unacceptable chemical residues.
- Preparation for dispatch of livestock- Ensures the livestock to be transported are fit for the journey, not unduly stressed and contamination is minimised during on-farm assembly and transport to the destination.
- Livestock transactions and movements- Ensures the movement of livestock can be traced if required, and that the chemical residue or food safety status of livestock accompanies their movement.
For each of the elements, there is a 'food safety outcome'. The food safety outcomes are aimed at ensuring meat from the livestock is fit for human consumption.
To maintain LPA accreditation, the producer must comply with all elements. These elements relate to what they declare and sign off on when completing the LPA NVD/Waybill. The producer also part of a random audit pool.
